Disc 1 of this album can be streamed here
As with the 4 previous albums in the Flotsam series, all the pieces on Disc 1 were created, but unreleased, during the making of 2020 Vision, Birds, Bees, Bells, Clocks and Keys, From Aardvark to Zebra/Goodbye Finisterre Re-imagined and Two Little Ducks.
Disc 2 contains a 'live' rendition of a suite of 'Canterbury'-style songs.
Disc One
1. Igor's Boogie/Holiday in Berlin (Zappa) [2:15]. After creating the sampler instruments from recorders, melodicas, zithers and musical novelties around the house, I was looking for some pieces to make arrangements of, and to use them in. This pair of compositions by Frank Zappa was the first one I did.
2. Improvisation in 5 [5:42]. This piece was recorded shortly after I got my Radel Milan digital Tabla and Tanpura, used for automatic accompaniment in Indian music.
3. Opening Time (Musical Box Version) [1:05]. A version of the song from Goodbye Finisterre (FORT02, 2003) for my 32-note musical box.
4. Edit 8 [1:56]. An unused edit from the sound recordings made for the GENRE album Garden of Bees (FORG36, 2021).
5. Standing Stones (Musical Box Version) [1:09]. Another track resulting from my experiments creating punched paper rolls for my musical box, an arrangement of the track from 2020 Vision (FORT19, 2020).
6. Edit 12 [1:50]. Another unused edit prepared for Garden of Bees.
7. Bee Song [2:19]. A version of the song from The Birds and the Bees (FORT06, 2005), subjected to the 'Pitch Designer' effect in the app AudioWorx Studio, which became available to me again during the making of 2 Little Ducks (FORT22, 2023). I was going to use this track in one of the parts of Birds, Bees, Bells, Clocks and Keys (FORT20, 2021), but decided against it.
8. Seagulls and Surf [2:01]. A piece that arose during the making of Ambient XVI: Hunstanton 2 (FORG38, 2022), but which I thought was a little too avant-garde for that album.
9. Birds, Bees, Bells, Clocks and Keys, Piano Piece [8:35]. A piano version of the main themes and variations from the Birds, Bees, Bells, Clocks and Keys sections of that album.
10. Haddenham Steam Rally (Short Version 2) [2:50]. The third to be released of the three short extracts I made from recordings at the Haddenham Steam Rally, 2022. The first two extracts appeared on 2 Little Ducks; the full version appears on AMBIENT XVII: Steam, Wind & Water [FORG 41, 2023].
11. Sheep May Safely Graze (J.S.Bach/Murkin) [4:09]. Yet another version of this piece by J.S.Bach, this time with an arrangement and some additional material of my own.
12. Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary (Purcell) [3:44]. After Igor's Boogie/Holiday in Berlin, this was the second non-original piece I arranged for my new sampler instruments.
13. Theme from an Imaginary Spy Film (2023 Mix) [3:21]. The first of two remixed pieces from From Aardvark to Zebra (FORT01, 2002) and Goodbye Finisterre, which didn't end up on Aardvark/Finisterre Re-imagined (FORT21, 2023).
14. Perpendicular Ideal of the Glasshouse, Pt 1 (2023 Mix) [7:37]. The second of those pieces. I wasn't happy with either of the two previous mixes of this piece, on Goodbye Finisterre and Popular Classics (FORG06, 2007); this one, while it might still not be perfect, corrects some of the deficiencies of both of those.
15. Theme from Box City (Long Version) [11:06]. The original 'long' version of the track from 2020 Vision, 'long' meaning longer guitar solos. As with the original, these are played on a 2020 Squire Bass VI, a 1963 Vox Dominator, and a 2013 Gibson Frank Zappa 'Roxy' SG, respectively.
Disc Two
The Canterbury Medley, consisting of the following songs: Overture; Have Another Gin, Joy; There Are Songs, Pt 1; Another Egress; There Are Songs, Pt 2; That's Entertainment.
